Art in public space is one of the priorities of the Institute of Urban Culture – City of Weaves. Why? Because it is the kind of art closest to the residents – it accompanies them every day, regardless of whether they actively seek it out. It fills streets, squares, parks, building walls, and plazas, becoming a natural element of the urban landscape.
Public art not only beautifies spaces but also becomes a tool of social dialogue. It reaches those who do not participate in traditional cultural events, while at the same time giving residents a voice, allowing them to express emotions, comment on reality, and initiate important discussions on social issues.
In the City of Weaves, we support street art and broadly understood public art by organizing activities in urban space, collaborating with artists, and initiating innovative projects. We create international networks for the exchange of experiences, study the social perception of art in the city, and document its impact on both the urban environment and the community.
Platforma Insitu
IN SITU: The European Platform for Artistic Creation in Public Space
Established in 2003, IN SITU is a European platform dedicated to supporting artistic creation in public spaces. Led by Lieux publics, a European and national center based in Marseille, France, and co-funded by the European Commission, IN SITU has, over two decades, supported over 300 artists working outside conventional venues, contributing significantly to the transformation of various territories across Europe.
Mission and Vision
IN SITU operates as an ecosystem connecting artists with audiences, programmers, and key players involved in the social and political landscapes of Europe. The platform believes in public space as a democratic arena where art can introduce new perspectives, fostering intercultural cooperation through tangible actions in the field.
Platform 2025-2028 Initiative
From 2025 to 2028, IN SITU is coordinating PLATFORM, a four-year program aimed at boosting the international careers of 200 emerging artists creating in public spaces and non-conventional venues throughout Europe. This initiative is structured into three cycles, each offering:
- Learning & Discovering: Access to online content focused on artistic production related to art in public spaces, peer-to-peer exchanges with experienced IN SITU artists, and immersive labs providing networking opportunities.
- Producing & Presenting: Tailored residency paths, dissemination opportunities, direct production grants, and participation in IN SITU FOCUS events showcasing emerging artists at international festivals in countries like Spain, Kosovo, and Austria.
IN SITU is committed to diversity and inclusion as outlined in the IN SITU diversity, equity and inclusion statement.
