IN SITU: The European Platform for Artistic Creation in Public Space

Established in 2003, IN SITU is a European platform dedicated to supporting artistic creation in public spaces. Led by Lieux publics, a European and national center based in Marseille, France, and co-funded by the European Commission, IN SITU has, over two decades, supported over 300 artists working outside conventional venues, contributing significantly to the transformation of various territories across Europe.

Mission and Vision

IN SITU operates as an ecosystem connecting artists with audiences, programmers, and key players involved in the social and political landscapes of Europe. The platform believes in public space as a democratic arena where art can introduce new perspectives, fostering intercultural cooperation through tangible actions in the field.

Platform 2025-2028 Initiative

From 2025 to 2028, IN SITU is coordinating PLATFORM, a four-year program aimed at boosting the international careers of 200 emerging artists creating in public spaces and non-conventional venues throughout Europe. This initiative is structured into three cycles, each offering:

  • Learning & Discovering: Access to online content focused on artistic production related to art in public spaces, peer-to-peer exchanges with experienced IN SITU artists, and immersive labs providing networking opportunities.
  • Producing & Presenting: Tailored residency paths, dissemination opportunities, direct production grants, and participation in IN SITU FOCUS events showcasing emerging artists at international festivals in countries like Spain, Kosovo, and Austria.

Network and Collaboration

IN SITU's success is built upon collaborative governance, with members actively participating in project design and strategic decision-making. The platform comprises over 20 partners from more than 20 countries, including Austria, Belgium, Burkina Faso, Chile, Czech Republic, Denmark, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Italy, Kosovo, the Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, South Korea, Spain, Tunisia, the United Kingdom, and the United States.
